Stop hurting yourselves, PN told after video on support letters
PETALING JAYA: Umno information chief Shahril Suffian Hamdan has urged Perikatan Nasional leaders to stop “shooting themselves in the foot” by practicing “old style politics”.
Shahril made his comment in response to a controversy over a PPBM Youth leader’s purported offer to use ministerial support letters in exchange for votes in the party elections.
“There is no world in which support letters in exchange for political support is okay. This is true for all sides, Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional,” Shahril said.
Shahril said young leaders need to show that when they are in positions of power, they do not continue “traditions” that have made voters cynical and resentful of politicians.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Ahmad Kamal of PPBM, who seeks election as party Youth leader, has come under scrutiny after a video clip made the rounds showing him purportedly offering support letters in exchange for votes.
Wan Ahmad Fayhshal is deputy minister for youth and sports.
Reports about the video prompted the Center to Combat Corruption & Cronyism (C4) to urge Putrajaya to spell out its anti-corruption agenda.
C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel said the government needed to do this unless it wanted to be seen as paying “mere lip service” towards curbing corruption.
“It is obvious that PPBM has leaders that do not respect the call of their prime minister to prioritise the anti-corruption agenda,” she said.
She urged the public to scrutinise politicians running for elections and “throw out those that use their positions to abuse public funds and enrich themselves”. - FMT
