Khalid Samad: Both Amanah and Pejuang fight corruption and injustice

Malaysiakini

SLIM POLLS | Amanah agreed to support former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's new party, Pejuang, because they have the common cause to combat corruption and fight injustice.
The party's communication director Khalid Samad (above) said this when met in Slim during the by-election campaign yesterday.
"Pejuang is a party that Dr Mahahir formed for developing the Malays on the basis of a principled political struggle, freedom from corruption and to fight for justice.
"It is based on those principles that we are in agreement, so we are able to give undivided support to Tun and his candidate here.
"Their principles are in line with ours," Khalid told Malaysiakini.
The Shah Alam MP was campaigning for independent candidate Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi who is backed by Parti Pejuang Tanah Air - which is Pejuang's full name.
When announcing the new party, Mahathir had said that Pejuang is not aligned to any coalition, whether Perikatan Nasional or Pakatan Harapan.
The registration form has been submitted to the Registrar of Societies, but Pejuang has yet to be approved as an official party.

On the cooperation between Pejuang and Harapan, Khalid, who is a former Federal Territories minister, said they must find ways to cooperate.
"If Pejuang does not join Harapan, we can still agree on having an electoral pact, so that together we can fight Perikatan Nasional (PN) or Muafakat Nasional or Barisan Nasional on a one-on-one, straight-fight basis.
"That's what we want.
"We can share the same platform which carries the same message. No problem," Khalid said.
Early this month, Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim said the coalition was prepared to consider admitting Pejuang as a component party.
Currently, Harapan is composed of PKR, DAP and Amanah. The Harapan federal government fell after the bulk of Bersatu and former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali's faction left the then ruling coalition to team up with Umno, PAS, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, MCA, MIC and some smaller parties and established the PN.
The issue of will be the prime minister caused a seemingly insurmountable barrier between Mahathir and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Mahathir, who is the Langkawi MP, was adamant that leaders of multiracial parties are not suitable to become the prime minister of Malaysia.
For Khalid, the issue of who is fit to become prime minister is not a conundrum.
"The person who will become the prime minister is the one who gets (a minimum of)112 (Members of Parliamentary) in support.
"This is a rather constitutional issue. We cannot say that this person or that person will become the prime minister.
"As long as any of them fail to secure the support of 112 lawmakers, he cannot become the prime minister.
"For us, we will see who will have those numbers, whether it be Tun or another candidate," Khalid added. - Mkini
