Pejuang-backed candidate to put voters above protocols, backs Syed Saddiq's move
SLIM POLLS | Independent candidate Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi, who represents Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) in the Slim by-election, is not interested in presenting a large manifesto or following protocols if he wins the Aug 29 election.
It is better to keep things simple, Amir Khusyairi said, and to pledge to practice a few key steps in carrying out his duties as the people's representative, should he be given the mandate.
"Someone asked me what my manifesto is. I do not like to use the word 'manifesto' at this time. Moreover, I am not a candidate who represents the federal or state government.
"I have to be with the voters at all times, without being bound by any strong protocol.
"I have to be easily approachable so that I can represent the voters and the Slim community," Amir Khusyairi told reporters at Trolak Utara, Sungkai, yesterday.
The syariah lawyer was asked how he would carry out his duties if he won the Slim by-election.
"I will practice four steps if I become the Slim assemblyperson.
"The four steps are listening to the people, finding solutions, taking action and providing updates on tasks and complaints brought to me," he said.
The Slim by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib (above) on July 15. Voting will be held on Aug 29.
Amir Khusyairi will face Mohd Zaidi Aziz of Umno/BN and independent candidate S Santharasekaran.
In GE14, Mohd Khusairi won his fourth term by with a majority of 2,183 votes, defeating Bersatu candidate contesting on the PKR ticket, Mohd Amran Ibrahim, and PAS candidate Muhammad Zulfadli Zainal.
'Syed Saddiq's move a good one'
Amir also said that he fully supported the plan by former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman to form a new party, instead of joining Pejuang.
"Syed Saddiq has come here to campaign for me and I strongly support his move to form a new party based on young people.
"As long as the aspirations of the struggle are the same, which are to uphold what is right and to reject kleptocracy, corruption and betrayal.
"I believe this will be positive for the people," he said, when asked to comment on plans by Syed Saddiq, the Muar MP, who confirmed that he will set up a multi-racial party based on young people, rather than participate in Pejuang. - Mkini
