PETALING JAYA: Parts of Malaysia can expect up to 1,100mm of rain this month as MetMalaysia issued a new yellow alert of more inclement weather even as floods ease.

“Kelantan, Terengganu and northeast Pahang are expected to see higher than average rain, between 650mm and 1,100mm in December.

“Several places in the northern and eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia like Perlis, Kedah (except Langkawi) and Hulu Perak will also see more rain – between 100m and 300mm, ” said MetMalaysia in a statement on Tuesday.

The rainfall of between 650mm and 1,100mm in Kelantan, Terengganu and northeast Pahang is

higher than the department’s forecast for these areas in November, which were between 350mm and 850mm.

Parts of Kelantan, Terengganu and even Perak and Penang experienced floods following heavy continuous rain over the weekend.

However, MetMalaysia director-general Jailan Simon said in October that it did not forecast any major floods in Kelantan or other states for the rest of the year despite a weak La Nina.

MetMalaysia said for December, places like Langkawi, Penang, Hilir Perak and Perak Tengah, Maran, Temerloh, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang as well as Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor could also anticipate more rain than usual, at between 100m and 800mm.

“Other places in Peninsular Malaysia will receive on average between 100m and 600mm of rain, ” added the department.

Except for Limbang, which will see higher rain than usual at between 450mm and 500mm, Sarawak can expect rain of between 300mm and 600mm.

Much of Sabah will see higher than average rainfall – with the west coast, Kudat and Sandakan receiving between 300mm and 700mm, and between 200mm and 250mm for Tawau and the interior, and between 400mm and 500mm for Labuan.

Yesterday, MetMalaysia issued a yellow alert for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Hulu Perak, Kelantan (Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai) and Terengganu (Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu), effective until today.

It also issued a yellow alert effective until Saturday for Terengganu (Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman) and Pahang (Jerantut, Temerloh, Maran, Kuantan, Bera, Pekan and Rompin).

It also warned of thunderstorms for the west coast, interior of Pahang and west coast of Sabah and western parts of Sarawak. - Star
