KUALA TERENGGANU: Continuous heavy rain over the past five hours saw most low-lying areas in the state capital inundated, reminiscent of the big floods of 2013.

Some cars parked near Pasar Payang, Jalan Banggol, Jalan Patani and areas near the Seri Kolam flats were washed away.

Low-lying areas in Cendering were also affected by floods.

Some buildings were seen under 0.5 metre of water and most roads leading into the city were impassable to vehicles.

Kondo Rakyat in Kuala Ibai and Paya Keladi at the main bus terminal were also under 0.5 metre of water.

The main road at the intersection in Kuala Ibai leading to the city was closed to light vehicles.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt- Col (PA) Che Adam Abdul Rahman when contacted said the floods were related to a high-tide phenomenon which raised the sea level by 2.2 metres causing Sungai Terengganu, Sungai Nerus and Sungai Ibai to overflow.

He said his men were on the ground assisting people trapped in the floods.

"The Meteorological Department has issued a warning on bad weather in east coast states today and tomorrow.

"This is the third wave of floods and those in flood prone areas must be prepared to evacuate their homes when required to do so," he said.

He added that his men were also monitoring the situation in other districts.

A housewife who was about to travel into town, Aznita Daud, 43, had to turn back after the road leading to Jalan Banggol was inundated.

"I wanted to buy some household items at a shop in Jalan Banggol but had to cancel my plan as the water was rising fast.

"Kuala Terengganu has not been hit by such big floods in many years," she said.

Aznita said she was nine years old when Kuala Terengganu was hit by a big flood in 1986. - NST
