Ismail Sabri: EMCO may be enforced at Jasin jail

 

MELAKA: A decision will be made tomorrow on whether to enforce the enhanced movement control order (MCO) at the Jasin correctional facility which has seen an increase in the number of Covid-19 infections.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pic)said the recommendation by the state government for the enhanced MCO would be raised at the National Security Council’s meeting tomorrow.

“The Health Ministry will carry out a risk evaluation on the situation at the centre before the government makes a decision.

“Only after the assessment, the Health Ministry will recommend whether an enhanced or conditional MCO should be enforced there. We will abide by that decision, ” he said after opening the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation’s (MCPF) AGM here yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, who is also MCPF deputy chairman, and MCPF senior vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye were present.

On Friday, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said the state government was proposing an enhanced MCO at the centre following a high number of Covid-19 cases among the inmates.

Separately, Ismail Sabri, who is also Umno vice-president, said the party’s divisional meetings and AGM scheduled next month would be attended by fewer members to comply with the Covid-19 SOP.

He said the Umno constitution stipulates that meetings at each level could be held with a minimum attendance of one quarter of the quorum.

“We will discuss how meetings should be conducted in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Sabah that are under conditional MCO, ” he said.

Meanwhile, police arrested 249 people for failing to comply with regulations under the MCO.

The offences recorded on Friday included failing to practise physical distancing (132 people), not wearing masks (63 offenders) and not leaving contact details (54 cases).

“A total of 248 individuals were given compounds and one was remanded, ” said Ismail Sabri.

The task force on SOP compliance also conducted 47,811 checks, involving 3,549 supermarkets, 4,761 restaurants, 1,794 hawkers, 1,144 factories, 3,321 banks and 548 government offices.

“A total of 962 land transport terminals, 245 water transport terminals as well as 111 air transport terminals were also monitored, ” he said in a statement.

Ismail Sabri said enforcement authorities had also arrested 46 illegal immigrants, two tekong (skippers) and eight land vehicles, with 118 roadblocks set up. - Star
