Report: Top Glove security guard believed to have died from Covid-19
A Nepali security guard working for glove manufacturer Top Glove at its factory in Meru, Klang is believed to have succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday.
News portal The Vibes reported that Yam Narayan Chaudhary was admitted to hospital on Nov 21 and spent nearly three weeks undergoing treatment before he passed away.
Yam is believed to have been working as a security guard for two years and attached to a security company.
This came a day after Reuters reported that Top Glove allegedly dismissed one of its foreign workers after he purportedly exposed the workers' crowded working conditions.
Yubaraj Khadka was reported to have taken two photos in May of fellow employees crowding into a factory of the world’s biggest maker of medical-grade latex gloves.
The photos showed dozens of workers lined up less than a metre apart to have their temperatures checked as a precaution against the disease before starting the night shift.
The company required everyone to wear masks and gloves, but Yubaraj and five other workers told Reuters that social distancing was not enforced or followed outside the factory.
Afraid of losing his job if he complained directly to management, the 27-year-old sent the photos to a workers’ rights campaigner in his native Nepal who sent them on to the company and the Malaysian government, without identifying who took them.
However, on Sept 23, Top Glove sent Yubaraj a letter terminating his employment for sharing the photos.
In the letter, which was seen by Reuters, the company said it identified him as the originator of the photos from CCTV coverage of workers entering the factory.
The Teratai cluster in Klang, which involves Top Glove workers, is so far the largest Covid-19 cluster in the country with 5,450 cases linked to the cluster.
