IGP: It’s a lie spread by syndicates
KUALA LUMPUR: The police have never given the green light to illegal gambling syndicates to operate nationwide, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pic).
He said he was aware of a “false flag” planted by the syndicates, which claimed that Bukit Aman had purportedly given them the go-ahead to operate.
“The lie, which has been spread since late last year, is meant to thwart raids and operations against the syndicates.
“The baseless allegation also stated that all gambling premises can resume operation by mid-January or by Chinese New Year.
“The notion that Bukit Aman has given the green light for the syndicates to operate is a malicious lie, ” he said yesterday.
A false flag is a term to describe an act committed with the intent of disguising the actual source of responsibility and pinning blame on a second party.
The IGP said he had already reminded all Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers and personnel to be brave in taking action against gambling syndicates’ “tauke” (bosses), who have ruined the lives of many people.
“I deeply appreciate the efforts of the honourable men and women of the police force in curbing illegal gambling activities.
“I pushed for the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca) to be used against the syndicates. I also called for foreign nationals involved in illegal gambling activities here to be declared ‘persona non grata’.
“I have brought up the matter with the Immigration Department director-general, ” he added.
Abdul Hamid said such approaches were needed as the gambling habit had become a serious problem among Malaysians.
“Many gamblers are stuck in the debt trap and there are also those who have committed crimes to fund their gambling habits, ” he added.
The country’s top cop urged the people to contact the police if they have any information on illegal gambling activities.
He also saluted the efforts of Ampang Jaya police who busted an illegal gambling syndicate on Friday. The latest bust led to the arrest of 18 people and gambling-related items seized. - Star
