Tajuddin 'suspects' suspended Prasarana chief behind attacks against him

Prasarana chairperson Tajuddin Abdul Rahman broke his silence over alleged abuse of power claims and hinted that the "attacks" could have been done by a company top officer who has been temporarily relieved of his duties.

Tajuddin said he had so far chosen to remain silent amid reported speculations on the status of Prasarana president and group chief executive Muhammad Nizam Alias, but there was now a need to clarify certain matters.

At a press conference today, Tajuddin confirmed that the Prasarana board had on Nov 27 last year decided to ask Nizam to go on leave over allegations of misconduct and insubordination.

He said the board had also instructed Prasarana's head of human capital to issue Nizam a show-cause letter and the latter had responded with his explanation, which has been presented to the board.

"The decision is to be fair to him and to follow internal procedures whereby the board had set up a three-member committee to study the allegations and his response.

"It has just been set up and I believe the committee will look into this. That is his current status," said Tajuddin.

He also took a swipe at Nizam, saying the latter was placed on leave but still enjoying his salary.

"I would expect him to be professional... but I suspect he has gone too far.

"Playing a game in the media to attack Prasarana and me... this is not good," he added.

'Reveal the source'

Commenting on various news reports on the issue, the Umno Pasir Salak MP said the media querying him today should be responsible for their reports, as he initially demanded to know identities of the quoted anonymous sources.

"Are you trying to say somebody fed you information? I want to know who that is. Reveal the source.

"To be responsible, reveal the source, then I will reply.

"Malaysiakini you are reporting, you must be responsible for your source... but never mind, I will give you the benefit (of the doubt)," Tajuddin said before proceeding to deny reports claiming he had a hand in deciding Nizam's suspension.

"It's not true at all. What suggestion are you talking about?

"Explain to me what suggestion, that I or the board refused to listen to him and as a result of that, we are taking this action against him? It's not true," he stressed.

On Dec 8, online portal The Vibes reported that Nizam had been suspended, quoting industry sources who attributed the move to a testy relationship at the leadership level after Tajuddin's appointment as chairperson in May last year.

At the time, it was reported that chief operations officer Norlia Noah would be interim president and group chief executive, and that more changes in the national transport operator’s senior leadership team and management were expected. - Mkini
