Cops: Fahmi arrested for jealousy-themed Spotify playlist

Artist-activist Fahmi Reza was arrested for a jealousy-theme Spotify playlist that was allegedly insulting to the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, according to police.

Based on the links provided by Bukit Aman CID chief Huzir Mohamed in a statement late last night, the playlist originally featured a portrait of the queen along with the words “This is Dengki Ke?”

The playlist featured 101 English and Malay songs by various artists, nearly all of which were jealousy themed.

The first song on the list was ‘Jealousy’ by the British rock band, Queen. Exceptions to the theme included ‘Mr Brightside’ by The Killers and ‘God Save The Queen’ by the Sex Pistols.

The playlist's title “This is Dengki Ke?” and the queen’s portrait have since been removed from the music streaming platform. The playlist remains accessible online.

“Police have received reports against the owner of Fahmi Reza’s Facebook account that is found to be insulting to the Raja Permaisuri Agong […]

“The police urges the people to be wise and courteous to social media users and not use the platform to cause anxiety and threaten national harmony.

“Firm and uncompromising action will be taken against any individual who deliberately sparks disharmony and threatens public order,” Huzir said in his statement.

He confirmed that police arrested Fahmi in Kuala Lumpur yesterday and he would be brought before a magistrate today for a remand application to facilitate further investigations.

The investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act is being conducted by the Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit, he said.

Previously, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consort had reportedly responded to questions on social media about Covid-19 vaccinations for royalty with the words “Dengki ke? (Are you jealous?)”

This drew widespread criticism on social media platforms, leading to the hashtag #DengkiKe becoming a top trending Twitter hashtag in Malaysia.

Fahmi had apparently created a series of satirical works based on the issue, which he then published on his social media channels over the past few days. - Mkini
