Let people earn some money in EMCO-affected Tawau, says MP
PETALING JAYA: Tawau MP Christina Liew has called on the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state government to allow certain sectors of the economy to operate in areas affected by the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) in the district.
Noting how the EMCO has affected the income of residents in the area, especially those in the B40 group, the Sabah PKR chief said her service centre is working to provide emergency assistance to families in need.
“I recommend the opening of a limited sector of the economy to reduce the burden and economic pressure on the people of Tawau who do not have a fixed income,” she said.
“Sales in residential areas and in villages need to be relaxed in accordance with the SOPs set.
“Apart from increasing their income and helping small traders, Tawau residents can also enjoy food for breaking fast like other districts in Sabah,” said the former Sabah deputy chief minister.
She also urged the GRS government to expedite assistance to the residents affected by the EMCO in Tawau, especially in Taman Sri Indah and Kampung Titingan.
Commenting on yesterday’s protest demonstration in Kampung Muhibbah Raya, Liew called for the release of activist Mukmin Nantang and his friends who had been detained.
The protestors had alleged that the livelihood and welfare of the residents had been neglected by the 14-day extension of the EMCO to May 8.
She said Mukmin and his friends should be given due justice in accordance with their right to freedom of expression. “The GRS and PN (Perikatan Nasional) governments need to listen and feel the pulse of the people in distress instead of denying them their right to have a say,” she said.
GRS comprises Barisan Nasional, PN and PBS. - FMT
