MIC pledges support for PM, PN in AGM

A week after Umno's decision to sever ties with Bersatu, the MIC today said it would continue to support Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's Perikatan Nasional administration, pending a final decision reached by BN's Supreme Council.

Party president S Vigneswaran (photo, above) in his policy speech at MIC's 74th Annual General Assembly in Klang also thanked Muhyiddin, who participated via the Zoom online platform.

"Umno last week has decided to end ties with Bersatu in the next 15th general elections.

"For the MIC, we respect the decision made in the spirit of BN unity," said the former Dewan Negara Speaker.

"However, the MIC, for now, will support Muhyiddin's administration and will cooperate with Bersatu pending a new development from a decision by BN's supreme council.

"Let us wait and see the political movements in this near future," he said.

At the same time, Vigneswaran also expressed confidence that Umno and Bersatu will be able to resolve their differences and reunite.

"This is just like how Umno and PAS buried the hatchet after being rivals for over 40 years," he added.

In thanking Muhyiddin, Vigneswaran noted that MIC was allocated a minister's post by the PN party, despite not being nominated by its BN allies.

Similarly, he said BN also did not nominate any MIC leaders for a deputy minister or Senators position.

"But ironically, we are still in the BN," he added.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong was also seen seated on the main stage alongside MIC leaders today.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, meanwhile, addressed the assembly via online teleconferencing.

The subject of MIC's stand with regards to ties with Bersatu and PN, following Umno's move, was also raised in the party wings' annual general assembly yesterday.

MIC deputy president M Saravanan said if a decision was made to follow Umno, the party must be prepared to face an unprecedented challenge in going to the polls as an opposition party. - Mkini
