PM: MIC right in backing PN, hopes it'll stick around

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today hailed MIC for making the right decision in backing Perikatan Nasional (PN)

Muhyiddin (photo, above) added that he hopes the Indian-based party will continue to do so even in the future.

This was amid Umno’s plan to cut ties with Bersatu and PN in the next general election, although Umno’s BN partners MIC, MCA and PBRS have yet to agree.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president, was invited to speak at the MIC annual general assembly in Klang today.

Muhyiddin, who delivered his speech through video conferencing, praised MIC for understanding the challenges the country is facing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I think the MIC leadership understand the situation the country and people are facing now. That is why they support the PN government to manage the country and help the people.

“This is the right and rational decision. I hope the Indian community in the country can evaluate MIC’s position well and support them.

“I hope MIC’s support for PN is not only for now but also in future,” he said.

Muhyiddin also urged the MIC to play its role to ensure political unity.

“As a political party, the biggest contribution that MIC can make is to emphasise on political unity and serve the people, not the political division for narrow interests.

“We have entered a new political era in the country. No party can claim that it is dominant and has more right to hold power while belittling other parties. That’s old politics,” he said.

The comment appears to be a veiled swipe at Umno, which had lamented that it was not given a significant enough role in the PN government.

The Umno leadership had made it clear that it must be in a dominant position when the new government is formed in the next general election.

Muhyiddin said every party has a role to play in this new political era.

“We practice a political culture based on understanding, consultation and consensus in finding the best ways to maintain political stability, to help the people and propel the country’s development.

“Any political direction undertaken by political parties must most importantly consider the people and country, not the interest of individuals or a small group,” he said.

Muhyiddin also thanked MIC for its support. - Mkini
