For the sake of 5mil students, have a post-lockdown plan, govt told
PETALING JAYA: With so much uncertainty on when five million students will be returning to schools, Pakatan Harapan (PH) has urged the government to immediately address lingering issues with regard to online teaching and learning.
It said among them are the issue of lack of devices, poor internet access, inappropriate syllabuses and the lack of teaching material.
The PH Education Committee, led by Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, put forward four proposals for the education ministry, in addition to calls for schooling not to be disrupted by further lockdowns.
In addition, the committee urged the government to expedite the vaccination of all teachers instead of limiting it to only those who are older and at risk.
The government was also urged to provide ‘one-off’ incentives to teachers for the purpose of purchasing data packages and preparing online teaching lessons.
“Reveal the school plan for post-lockdown in a transparent manner so that teachers, parents and students can make early preparations.
“Accelerate the distribution of all 150,000 laptops promised to students from B40 families,” the committee said in a statement.
It also asked the government to implement a long-term plan for online teaching and learning at home if the lockdown is extended past the two weeks as announced.
“Whether the students will return to school or learn from home, what is the plan if the travel restrictions are extended or terminated.
“We don’t want last-minute announcements as usual,” he said.
Maszlee added that the failure of the government, particularly of the minister and his deputies, to provide proactive feedback would hurt more than five million students.
The government announced the implementation of a total lockdown for at least two weeks from June 1-14, after which restrictions may be loosened if Covid-19 can be controlled. - FMT
