It’s not flip-flops but dynamic SOPs, says Muhyiddin
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has sought to clarify that the implementation of movement control rules is not static as they are made according to the current Covid-19 pandemic situation.
In answer to complaints by the public that the changes in the SOPs are confusing, Muhyiddin said the rules must be flexible and adjustable according to the needs of the current situation.
“They are not static. They follow the situation that requires us to make adjustments to deal with different situations. For example, previously restaurants were allowed to have dine-in customers but they are not allowed to do so now,” he said in an exclusive interview with RTM and Bernama TV.
He said the implementation of the SOPs was decided at meetings attended by relevant ministries and stakeholders such as the National Security Council and attorney-general.
“If you don’t understand or are confused, you can always ask. We have also asked the relevant ministers and officials to provide an explanation (regarding the SOPs),” he said.
Further, he explained that state governments did not have the power to request changes in the SOPs as the power rested with the federal government.
He said there was no issue of double-standard in implementing the SOPs as every action taken must be based on the law. “The government does not care who the individuals are, be it ministers or not. Anyone who violates the SOPs will not escape punishment,” he said.
However, he added that, with a population of 30 million in the country, it would be hard for the authorities to monitor everyone.
Muhyiddin said the implementation of the national immunisation programme would lift sentiments and contribute towards the recovery of economic activity.
He said herd immunity could be achieved before the end of the year.
Asked about calls for the country to adopt a delayed vaccination strategy or “one-dose strategy”, he said it would be better to follow the vaccine administration guidelines issued by the vaccine manufacturer.
“I don’t say the strategies are wrong but it would be better for us to follow the guidelines and instructions issued by the vaccine manufacturers.” - FMT
