MP: Sarawak wise in sticking with CMCO

The Sarawak state government has acted wisely in deciding what is best for the Borneo state, according to Bersatu's Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin.

The deputy plantation industries and commodities minister said this following the Sarawak government's refusal to place the state under a movement control order (MCO) despite Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announcing a nationwide MCO recently.

Sarawak instead decided to continue with its conditional MCO but with tightened restrictions until May 17.

For the record, Sarawak has constantly remained as the state with the third-highest number of new Covid-19 cases daily. Yesterday, the state registered 405 new confirmed cases for a total of 36,725 cumulative cases.

Willie (above) said he believed the Sarawak administration made its decision in line with advice from the Health Ministry and the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

"I am confident that the decision (not to implement an MCO) was in line with the advice of the Health Ministry and Sarawak's own disaster management committee.

"Perhaps some may disagree and say that we (the state government) should follow the federal government. But I think we can be wiser in deciding what is best for the state," he told Malaysiakini when contacted yesterday.

On May 10, Muhyiddin announced that the country would be placed under another MCO from May 12 to June 7.

Prior to this, only Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan, and Penang as well as part of Selangor, Perak, Terengganu, and Johor were under an MCO while Sarawak and Sabah were under a conditional MCO.

Besides Sarawak, Sabah which recorded 70 new confirmed cases for a total of 59,073 cumulative cases as of yesterday, also decided not to implement the latest MCO.

Sabah’s number of new Covid-19 cases daily has been mostly consistent at under 100 save for a few days when a new cluster was identified. - Mkini
