PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, who is also special envoy to the Middle East, should hold a campaign for Arab countries to join Malaysia in protesting against Israel’s violence in the Gaza Strip, says Khalid Samad.

The Amanah communications director said PAS, as part of the Perikatan Nasional administration, should also state the government’s clear stance against the Israeli occupation.

“We have not heard any proposals from him (Hadi) in facing this crisis. Arab unity is extremely important in establishing effective protests,” he told FMT.

Khalid said the government must be more proactive and work on gaining international support to pressure the US and Israel to stop the violence against the Palestinians.

“Malaysia, Turkey and Indonesia can play important roles in mobilising Islamic countries to defend the Palestinians,” he said.

Tensions have worsened between Israel and the Palestinians since last Monday, with the United Nations even warning that it could spark an all-out war.

The series of violent attacks escalated after Israeli riot police clashed with Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan.

According to reports, at least 67 people, including 14 children, have been killed so far, and some 388 people have been wounded by Israeli air strikes in Gaza. - FMT
