Viral SPM grading chart not from Malaysian exam syndicate - ministry

The Education Ministry (MOE) today denied an "SPM grading scale" chart that has gone viral on social media was from the ministry’s examinations syndicate.

In a statement, MOE said the chart gave the impression that it was the actual grading scale for the 2020 SPM exam. This can confuse the public, the ministry said, particularly exam candidates and their parents.

“It must be emphasised that the 'SPM grading scale' chart being viralled is not from the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate under the MOE.

“The Examinations Syndicate has lodged a police report... and has also reported the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC),” the MOE said.

It added that the viral chart has also tarnished the image and credibility of the Examinations Syndicate as the national assessment body and also threatened public order.

MOE’s statement was referring to a Facebook post under the name "MamaMia Mia" on an "SPM grading scale" chart, with the caption “Patut aku pelik budak2 sekarang berderet A” (No wonder, I find it strange that many children are scoring straight As these days.)

The post also included the hashtag "#bilasekolahdipolitikkan" (#whenschoolsarepoliticised).

The chart showed a more lenient marking scheme. For Additional Math, students who scored only 50 marks could get an A- grade, while for English and Bahasa Melayu, students who only scored 66 marks could get an A- grade.
