Address mounting deaths in your backyard, Johor reps tell PM

A group of Johor assemblypersons want Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to address the mounting Covid-19 deaths in northern Johor, where his parliamentary seat of Pagoh is located.

The state representatives pointed out that a total of 168 people have died from Covid-19 in the districts of Muar, Tangkak and Segamat in July alone. Some 106 of them were in Muar.

"Muhyiddin is from Muar. His Pagoh parliamentary constituency and Gambir state constituency cover the districts of Muar and Tangkak, which are facing a serious spread of the pandemic.

"If the prime minister's constituency is facing a lack of medical resources to combat Covid-19 and the situation is going out of control, then it is no surprise that the people are becoming anxious and losing confidence in the government's capability," they said in a statement yesterday.

The statement was signed by Tangkak assemblyperson Ee Chin Li, Bentayan assemblyperson Ng Yak Howe, Jementah assemblyperson Tan Chen Choon and Johor DAP executive committee member Lim Eng Guan.

They appealed for the Health Ministry to allocate more resources to northern Johor.

The Covid-19 pandemic, which has ravaged the Klang Valley, has in recent weeks began to aggressively spread to other states.

Johor, for example, has recorded fresh infections in the four digits for five consecutive days.

A Covid-19 cluster that has rocked the local community there involves a manufacturing facility owned by STMicroelectronics (STM) at the Tanjung Agas Industrial Zone in Muar, where more than a dozen workers have died from Covid-19.

Local authorities have been criticised for being slow to act as the factory chalked up hundreds of Covid-19 cases.

The lawmakers said the recent spike in Johor was severe and urged the government to urgently address the shortcomings.

Three northern Johor districts only saw 38 Covid-19 deaths in May but this rose to 101 in June and 168 last month, they added.

"Don't take things for granted, as if the deaths are now a norm."

They also urged the Health Ministry to be transparent about the intensive care unit capacity in northern Johor.

"Every death is a tragedy to a family. We hope Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah can conduct a field visit to Muar and Tangkak soon," the group added. - Mkini
