Interfaith group urges action against preacher who derided other religions

Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) has called on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's government to act against a religious preacher for allegedly deriding people of other faiths.

The council said videos of his sermon circulated on social media were extreme, racist and filled with hatred.

Former Umno MP Tawfik Ismail had also lodged a police report against the preacher for "insulting and defaming Buddhists, Hindus, the Dayak community, as well as other non-Islamic faiths".

"The ustaz accuses falsely that non-Muslims whom he labels as kafirs are planning to kill the Muslims in Malaysia.

"The videos clearly aim at sowing hatred and inciting the Muslims against Hindus, Buddhists and the Dayak community, including other non-Muslims religions which can lead to a breach of the peace," MCCBCHST said in a statement.

'Ustaz clearly breached Malaysian laws'

The interfaith group said the prime minister and relevant authorities should take stern action.

It cited Section 298A of the Penal Code, which concerns the uttering of words with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person, and Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 on the improper use of network facilities.

"He has clearly breached Malaysian laws and his utterances are likely to cause ill-will and disunity among the different faiths in Malaysia.

"Such incitements by any person should be condemned by all and the person be severely dealt with so that it is a lesson to all," MCCBCHST said.

The statement was endorsed by Malaysian Gurdwaras Council's Sardar Jagir Singh Arjan Singh, Federation of Taoist Associations Malaysia's Tan Hoe Chieow, Malaysia Hindu Sangam's RS Mohan Shan, Christian Federation of Malaysia's Julian Leow Beng Kim and Malaysian Buddhist Association's Seet Lee Terk. - Mkini
