Baru Bian to Harapan: Let's ensure straight fight against GPS

Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) presidential council member Baru Bian has reached out to Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen for the two parties to do their best in cooperating with each other.

The Selangau MP urged them to work together to ensure a straight fight against the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition.

"PSB is ready and willing to work together with like-minded opposition parties in the state with one objective - to bring the change we all want for the people of Sarawak by toppling GPS/BN.

"The coalition has ruled Sarawak for more than 50 years and yet we remain among the poorest states in Malaysia.

"There should be no three or multiple corner fights between the opposition parties and GPS," Baru (above) said in a statement last night.

He claimed that the process had in fact started some time ago and is ongoing.

"We are hopeful about reaching an understanding and consensus soon," said the former works minister.

S'wak DAP finds it 'hard' to work with PSB

Yesterday, Chong said at a press conference that Sarawak DAP does not see itself working with fellow opposition party PSB in the upcoming state election due to the latter’s supposed “suspicious” funders and perceived similarities with GPS.

Chong even branded PSB an “offshoot” of GPS saying its operations, ideology and modus operandi were very similar to the ruling coalition.

“Because of that, I think it becomes a bit hard (and) difficult for us to come to cooperation with PSB. Of course, politics sometimes makes the impossible, possible.

“But as it is now, it is quite impossible because of the coloured (sic) and very suspicious financial backers. In fact, their financial backers basically are the same financial backers of GPS... during BN’s time,” he said, adding that his party may have to take on both GPS and PSB.

Earlier this year, it had been reported that Chong was willing to offer 30 percent of seats to PSB, while Sarawak Pakatan Harapan contested in 70 percent, but his offer had been rebuffed with PSB saying that it might contest all seats.

GPS has governed Sarawak since 2018 with a supermajority of 69 seats in the 82-seat assembly.

The opposition - comprising DAP and PSB - had a total of 11 seats.

The Sarawak legislative assembly's term expired on June 7. However, in effect at the time was an emergency that postponed the automatic dissolution of the state assembly until Feb 2, 2022.

Last week, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong assented to lifting the localised emergency in Sarawak on Nov 3.

The state legislative assembly was also dissolved on Nov 3.

The long-delayed Sarawak election must now be held within 60 days from that date.

The Election Commission has yet to announce definite dates for the state election. - Mkini
