Shoppers happy with lower prices
JOHOR BARU: For many families, the Malaysian Family Sale has helped reduce their food bill.
“Vegetables, such as kangkung and bayam, are priced at RM6 per kg compared to RM8 in the market,” said housewife Azizah Alias, 55, who visited the state-level Malaysian Family Sale at a hypermarket in Taman Daya here yesterday.
“I went to the sale to see if the prices are indeed lower than the other places. I am really happy that it is true. And on top of that, the items are fresh,” she said.
Azizah also reported that chicken costs RM7.99 per kg compared to RM9 or RM10 elsewhere.
The Malaysian Family Sale, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob last week, and started yesterday, will be held at 222 parliamentary constituencies twice a month until February.
It is the government’s attempt at helping consumers buy necessities at lower prices amid the rising cost of living due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
School van operator Noriah Yahya, 50, also said the Malaysian Family Sale has helped ease her finances as the goods are cheaper.
Prior to this, she would spend about RM1,000 per month – including RM300 every fortnight – on fresh food like fish and chicken for her family.
“My husband lost his job as a lorry driver because of the pandemic. He is now a taxi driver. Both of us have to work to make sure there will be food on the table for our family,” she said.
Housewife Rohaidah Abdul Rahim, 55, who has three children and three grandchildren, said she mainly bought vegetables, mackerel and chicken at the sale.“These items are really expensive at other places. It’s good that the government is having this programme to help the public.
“Things are getting pricier now. The Malaysian Family Sale should be held more often as it will help those who are facing difficult times,” she said.
Meanwhile, state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) director Mohd Hairul Anuar Bohro warned traders not to take advantage of travellers coming from Singapore under the land Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL-Land) to increase prices.
He said the ministry would continue to carry out frequent checks.
“If there is a price hike due to the VTL-Land, the state KPDNHEP will take stern action in accordance with the law,” he added.
He urged consumers to forward their complaints to the ministry immediately if they come across sellers hiking their prices.
“Consumers should practise smart spending. They should compare the prices at various premises before making a purchase.
“If they notice that there are items being sold at a higher price, they can make a complaint directly to us, “ he said. - Star
