After vaccination ‘mess’, GPS slammed for holding elections

PETALING JAYA: An Opposition MP from Sarawak has hit out at the former GPS government for pouring its resources in campaigning for the Dec 18 state elections, instead of prioritising the rollout of the vaccine booster shots.

Dr Kelvin Yii said a recent visit to the Spring Shopping Mall highlighted the “mess” of the programme, with some queueing for more than two hours before being allowed in.

There was also no proper social distancing, said Yii, who is Bandar Kuching MP.

“Immediately we could see that people were anxious and feeling uneasy. Many shared with us their plight and difficulties in getting the booster dose,” he said in a Facebook post.

And while the police, Red Crescent Society and officers from the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) were doing everything they could to manage the situation, it was “really challenging”.

“We were told resources from the health ministry and other authorities are extremely limited.”

And with the emergence of the Omicron variant of concern, Yii reiterated that this was not really the right time for the elections.

He said a responsible government must focus on rolling out vaccine booster doses to all corners of Sarawak, as fast as possible. “Instead what the (former) GPS government does is divert most of their resources and focus on election campaigns.”

Yii added that Sarawak had the Emergency in place until February 2022 and therefore the state elections could wait. However, GPS had pushed for ending the Emergency early even though the Covid-19 situation is still highly risky.

“It is so irresponsible and sickening,” he said, urging the state government to put politics aside for the sake of the people’s health and security. - FMT
