EC affirms Anwar’s PD candidacy

PD POLLS | Newly-minted Election Commission chairperson Azhar Azizan Harun says the agency has affirmed Anwar Ibrahim’s candidacy for the Port Dickson by-election.

He said it was up to the court to decide on the validity of Anwar’s candidacy if any originating summons is filed to challenge the PKR president-elect's candidacy.

This comes after PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said PAS would win Port Dickson if the court disqualifies Anwar.

“We have accepted Anwar’s nomination based on the pardon granted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“Of course, we are aware there is a legal action going on... it is up to the judge to make the decision now.

“I cannot preempt that by telling you what we want to do if the judge (decides) this way or another.

“As it is, Anwar is a candidate and he is running in this by-election,” Azhar told reporters after visiting the Pusat Latihan Asas Tentera Darat (Pusasda) early voting centre in Port Dickson today.

PAS had previously said that Anwar is not eligible to contest the Port Dickson by-election. It claimed that the Agong only granted Anwar a “full pardon” and not a “free pardon”.

Takiyuddin said if PAS were to get the second highest number of votes in the by-election, the party could potentially win if Anwar is declared an ineligible candidate by the court.

A registered voter in Port Dickson has filed an originating summons against Anwar’s candidacy and the case management has been fixed for today. - Mkini
