Minister promises coupon system after school uniform bungles for poor kids
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad has promised to move to a coupon system for aid given to poor schoolchildren.
This is after Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng highlighted complaints that aid in the form of school uniforms and shoes given by Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan to needy schoolchildren could not fit them due to the sizes being for adults or even babies.
"To date, one complaint was received about the size of shoes and pants. I have instructed the Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan chief executive officer to investigate and provide me a report.
"Beginning next year, a coupon system will be used for recipients. They will no longer be in the form of school shoes and clothes," he said in a statement.
The items, which were imported from China, had also faced delays in delivery which was a predicament for the needy students facing the new school term.
Khalid said Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan had made contributions to some 20,000 needy students in the federal territories, 3,250 of whom received free bags and an RM100 voucher each while the remaining received free bags and school uniforms.
The minister stressed that there would be no cover-up in the bungle.
"No cover-up. Anyone found to have committed wrongdoing will face action," he said. - Mkini
