Mat Hasan: People tired of Harapan's politics of 'blame and slander'

RANTAU POLLS | Umno acting chairperson Mohamad Hasan claimed that his comfortable win in the Rantau by-election proved that the people are tired of Pakatan Harapan.
"The people rejected them and that is why I won comfortably.
"People are growing tired of the politics of slander, blaming others... doesn't lead to anywhere," he told a press conference after the Election Commission announced the official results.
Instead, the former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar said the people wanted to know how the government would lead the country through political and economic instability.
Mohamad won the by-election with a 4,510 vote majority against Harapan's Dr S Streram and two independent candidates.
The Umno leader also noted the personal attacks against him and former premier Najib Abdul Razak during the campaign period.
"There was non-stop attack against Najib as though he was the candidate," he added.
Najib, who was present at the press conference, laughed at the remark.
Mohamad said his win with a comfortable majority today was unexpected, especially since Rantau only has a small Malay majority.
"In other constituencies, people can say Umno won because there are a lot of Malay votes, (but that is not the case here)," he said.
Some 55 percent of voters in Rantau are Malay, 26 percent Indian, and 18 percent Chinese.
Mohamad won the by-election with 63 percent of the total votes.
Umno defectors welcome to rejoin party
Meanwhile, Mohamad dismissed a question on whether Bersatu would poach more of Umno's MPs to weaken the party.
"Why should they jump to Bersatu? Umno and BN is getting stronger. If I am the MP, I wouldn't jump, I would never do that," he said.
Umno defectors were welcome to rejoin the party but would need to get new membership numbers, he quipped.
The seat fell vacant after the Federal Court upheld a decision to void his walkover win last year.
This stemmed from the returning officer's move to block Streram from filing his nomination papers in the 2018 general election. - Mkini
