27 Luxury Vehicles, 29 Bank Accounts Not Mine, Says Najib

(FMT) – Former prime minister Najib Razak has rubbished a report that “gave the impression” that he and his wife have 27 luxury cars, 29 bank accounts and a property in the Klang Valley said to be financed with 1MDB funds.

“I was also surprised yesterday because I did not expect that we would ever have 27 luxury cars and 29 bank accounts,” Najib said on Facebook today, referring to a report by The EdgeMarkets yesterday afternoon.

“What is more surprising,” Najib added, “is that the 27 luxury cars actually refer to 27 Nissan Urvans!”.

The Nissan Urvan is a 14-seat van. A separate report yesterday by TheEdgeMarkets detailed the 27 vehicles and their licence plates as well.

Najib questioned why he was being accused of owning these vehicles and why they were labelled as luxury vehicles. He said it was “evil PH propaganda”.

“But I understand. Their propaganda and lies must be this way so that the ‘raykat’ can enjoy for a while,” he said, using the “raykat” spelling in reference to a student activist’s spelling on a placard when they protested against his appearance outside Universiti Malaya earlier this year.

Najib also said that a lawyer told him that The Edge report is wrong.

“It turns out that the bank accounts, property and those ‘luxury cars’ are not mine or my family’s but are linked to others,” he said.

It was reported yesterday by TheEdgeMarkets that the government had filed a suit against Najib, his wife, Rosmah Mansor and several others over the seizure of jewellery, cash, handbags and luxury vehicles, believed to have been purchased with 1MDB money.

Apart from them, their children, Nooryana Najwa and Nor Ashman Razak, along with Najib’s stepson Riza Shahrir Abdul Aziz, were named in the RM680 million forfeiture action, TheEdgeMarkets added.

In addition to the family, five companies and eight individuals are also named in the legal action, for which notice of motion was filed two days ago, it added. They include Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia and former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng.

This follows two notices of motion and supporting affidavits filed at the High Court on Tuesday to seize a total of RM711 million worth of items from these individuals.

The first notice of motion was to seize a piece of property in the Klang Valley, cash (including in foreign currencies), jewellery, handbags, watches and sunglasses said to be worth RM680 million.

A property referred to as Lot PT80 in Kuala Lumpur, seized on Nov 1, 2018, is also on the list of items sought, the newspaper said.

The second notice of motion was to seize RM31 million worth of items, including 27 luxury cars, cash (including in foreign currencies) and more watches and bags, and to freeze 29 bank accounts.

The first EdgeMarkets report said sources claimed this was a “follow-up” to the seizure of the valuables by police last year at properties within the Bukit Bintang area and other places, after PH won GE14.

On May 16 last year, police conducted a raid on several residences and offices linked to the former Umno president.

Former Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Amar Singh said then that the cumulative value of the items seized was estimated at between RM900 million and RM1.1 billion, making it the biggest seizure in the country’s history.

Umno had made a claim for the RM116.7 million but the High Court struck out the claim two months ago.
