Mandarin proficiency is what some jobs require, nothing to do with ethnicity, says MCA

PETALING JAYA: Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik should not have picked the example of requiring Mandarin proficiency when applying for a job as this was what certain jobs require and is unrelated to the ethnicity of the applicant, says MCA.
Party vice-president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said companies in Malaysia, irrespective of ownership, hire talents that are best equipped to improve the company's performance.
"Is Mandarin the primary qualification for all industries throughout the private sector … Or is Dr Maszlee confusing Malaysia with China or Taiwan?" he said in a statement on Saturday (May 18).
Ti said if there were any inadequacies or disadvantages among Malaysian graduates in the job market, then the minister should suggest remedies to better equip students.

"It has nothing to do with ethnicity but education," he said.

Ti alleged that Dr Maszlee was "still stuck in the old mindset of race and is a disappointment to the expectations of educational reform in a new Malaysia".
"Even (Prime Minister) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to bring back science and mathematics in English in recognition of the need to equip our students with a good command of the language.
"Dr Maszlee as Education Minister has the power to change the national education syllabus to tailor teaching and learning that will facilitate the needs of the industry instead of playing on racial sentiments.
"Learn English, communicative or commercial Chinese language or others, besides safeguarding the position of Bahasa Malaysia to ensure the progress of our beloved nation," he said.
Ti added that corporations do not discriminate based on ethnicity but hire base on marketability and profitability.
"There's always and already in existence the policies and bumiputra quota to protect the intake of bumiputra. We should not hinder competition and growth by creating unnecessary political rhetoric and prejudices thus affecting the growth of business," he said.
Ti said employment must fit business requirements, adding that Dr Maszlee should insist on helping non-Chinese to learn more languages to make them more competitive instead of coming up with policies that may "spoil or stunt" their growth.
The Education Minister had claimed that if Malaysians did not want the matriculation quota system, then job opportunities should not be denied to bumiputra because they do not speak Chinese.
He also claimed that some companies require job applicants to be proficient in Mandarin.- Star
