Naik to return to Bukit Aman over reports against DAP leaders, ex-envoy

KUALA LUMPUR: Indian preacher Dr Zakir Naik is expected to return to Bukit Aman within the next two days to have his statement recorded following his report against five individuals including a minister.

His lawyer, Akberdin Abdul Kader, said the police have classified Naik’s report under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.

Those found guilty can be jailed for up to two years, fined or both.

“He will return to the federal police headquarters tomorrow or Friday to assist the police in their probe,” Akberdin told FMT.

Last Friday, Naik lodged a police report against former Malaysian ambassador Dennis Ignatius and four elected representatives from DAP: Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy, Klang MP Charles Santiago and Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy.

The preacher himself was the subject of over 100 police reports which saw him summoned to record his statement as well.

Akberdin said the police had informed him that Naik’s statement was only recorded after investigators interviewed two of the individuals who had filed reports.

Naik was engaged in a marathon round of questioning at Bukit Aman on Monday, in a continuation of an interview that began on Friday over remarks made in public speeches in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

He is believed to have cast doubts on the loyalty of Malaysian Hindus and questioned the position of the Chinese community in Malaysia.

He reportedly claimed that Malaysian Indians are more loyal to the Narendra Modi government in India than to the Malaysian government, and described the Malaysian Chinese community as “old guests” who should go back to their ancestral land before he is made to leave the country.

Naik yesterday apologised for any misunderstandings over his statements, claiming that these had been taken out of context with “strange fabrications” added.

He has also sent a letter of demand to the DAP politicians and Ignatius for defamation, seeking compensation along with a public apology.

All five individuals have challenged him to file a suit to have the matter determined in court. - FMT
