PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has approved an allocation of RM10mil to help fund the increase allowances for interns undergoing practical training at government agencies.
The move follows the Cabinet's recent decision to increase the allowance from RM1.60 an hour to RM5 an hour.
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 25), said the Cabinet at its weekly meeting gave the green light to the allocation.
"This will allow the public sector to continue providing practical training to interns while at the same time ensuring their welfare is taken care of.
"The government is serious about providing quality training to youths as future leaders of the country, and making sure that they can fulfil the demands of the job market," said Syed Saddiq in the statement.
On his Twitter account, the minister wrote: "Good news for the Youths after cabinet meeting today. Alhamdulillah!"
Earlier this month, Syed Saddiq, who is also Muar MP, said the government had agreed to increase the hourly allowance rate from RM1.60 to RM5 – which translates to an increase in monthly allowances from RM300 to RM900.
Prior to this, practical trainees in the government were not given allowances.- Star
