Mukhriz baffled over Muhyiddin's change of heart
Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir is baffled on how someone who convinced others against the 1MDB scandal could change his allegiance to Umno.
During a talk with Bersatu members in Alor Setar last night, Mukhriz (above) questioned Bersatu acting president and newly sworn-in Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on his change of heart even after being sacked by Umno.
Mukhriz said it was Muhyiddin, the former deputy prime minister, who started condemning his boss, former PM Najib Abdul Razak, for his involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
"If you go on Youtube today, you can find videos of Muhyiddin talking in detail about the matter. Furnishing us with proof, we were convinced by him, so we left Umno and formed Bersatu," said Mukhriz at his residence in Mentaloon.
"It was after all his revelations that we contested in the last national polls (GE14) and successfully toppled a 60-year-old BN government," added Mukhriz who is struggling to keep his MB post although the situation remains status quo for now.
On Monday, Muhyiddin formed a new government with support from Umno and PAS MPs.
Sacked PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and 10 other PKR MPs joined him in the new alliance.
But Muhyiddin (below) said he had not desired to get the top post.
"I only stepped forward to save the situation when both candidates for prime minister did not get majority support from the Dewan Rakyat," he had said.
Mukhriz said he was speechless to see Muhyuddin change his stand and is now willing to work with Umno's kleptocratic leaders.
"I could not do it. Because I believed Muhyiddin, the old Muhyiddin.
"But he seems to have changed when faced with the PM post, it's just a means to an end," Mukhriz said.
"To become PM, he toppled our chairperson, and our PM, he plotted the downfall of the PM from our own party Bersatu, not (PKR leader) Anwar Ibrahim," he added.
"This is really heartbreaking."
Mukhriz said it was most painful when one is betrayed, not by an enemy but a close friend, who suddenly changed his principles.
"We are speechless. Due to this, I lost many friends. I don't know what to say," Mukhriz lamented.
He reminded members of the party's tag line "Bersih, Amanah dan Maruah"(clean, trustworthy and dignity), saying "without these, our party remains just a name".
However, Mukhriz said many turned up today to hear his explanation about the political crisis because they still felt strongly of the party's struggle.
Mukhris urged members not to allow Umno to control the federal government, especially when Pakatan Harapan, including Bersatu, fought hard against them.
He urged people not to be misled by the name of the new coalition "Perikatan Nasional" when Umno is behind it.
"It just looks as if Bersatu is holding the PM's post but Umno is the one in control.
"We have to seize that power back into Bersatu's hands," he said. - Mkini
