MCO violation: 52 people arrested in Melaka a day after police issued warning
MELAKA: Melaka police detained a record 52 people for violating the movement control order (MCO), a day after the state's top cop warned of stern action.
The arrests were made on Thursday (April 16) as compounds were no longer issued.
On Wednesday (April 15), Melaka police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Mat Kasim Karim said that those violating the MCO would be detained on the spot if they did not have valid reasons to be out of the house.
"Leeway is only given to those in the essential services," he said on Thursday, adding that cops would not accept lame excuses.
ACP Mat Kasim said there were still stubborn people although the compliance level of MCO in Melaka stood at 97%.
He said his team was better able to focus on controlling the Covid-19 spread as most cases in the state were linked to the Seri Petaling mosque cluster.
"We want to make the fight against Covid-19 a successful one and need the close cooperation from the locals," he said.
DCP Kasim said the traffic police would also complement the effort to keep vigil on MCO violators.
He added that police would intensify patrols in suburban and rural areas. - Star
