NYPD Releases Videos Urging Chinese Community to Report Hate Crimes

The NYPD condemned the rise in Asian-bias hate crimes from COVID-19 and called for more reports.

In a tweet thread posted to the NYPD News on April 22, the NYPD showed solidarity with Asians who were the targets and victims of hate crimes within the city.

“Hate. It’s an ugly word & it has no place in our vocabulary. And there is NO tolerance for it in NYC,” it read. “We will continue to arrest those responsible for COVID-19 Asian-bias hate crimes & hold them accountable, but we need your help, if you were a victim call 911 to report it.”

In the Twitter thread, Regina Ou, a police officer from the 61st Precinct spoke in both Cantonese and Mandarin in two separate videos and called on all Chinese people in New York to report those crimes.

Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison echoed the same sentiment in an English version.

She said since many of the Chinese people living in the city do not speak a lot of English, they do not report when an incident happens. However, she insisted that they do, because the officers are there to find and apprehend those accountable. They want to help, no matter your immigration status.

If language is an issue, a government translator or interpreter can assist with the language barrier.

Ou urged them to contact the NYPD Crimes Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-577-TIPS if they are the victims of a hate crime or witness to one.
