Two orchestras perform from home in tribute to frontliners

With concert halls and other performances spaces closed due to the movement control order (MCO), two orchestras have taken their musical talents online to pay tribute to frontliners battling Covid-19.

Playing their instruments individually in front of a camera from their respective homes, musicians at the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MYPO) have put together a video of their virtual orchestra’s rendition of the iconic Star Wars main theme.

The six-minute video of the piece originally composed by John Williams was uploaded on Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra’s (MPO) social media accounts on Wednesday.

“This is a special tribute by the amazing talents of our MYPO for our frontliners who are working extremely hard in this trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Performing 'Main Title - Star Wars Suite' composed by John Williams, this is a gesture of gratitude from the MPYO, under the tutelage of its mentors from Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), for all our frontliners all around Malaysia and the rest of the world.

“Please stay at home. Enjoy the music! May the force be with you,” the caption read.

The MPO and MYPO last performed the piece on Dec 14 last year, in conjunction with the release of the movie ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker’ the following week.

RTM Orchestra

Meanwhile, the RTM Orchestra had likewise performed the patriotic song 'Bahtera Merdeka' and dedicated it to the frontliners.

The performance ended with an audio clip of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s disembodied voice praising the frontliners.

“To the frontliners, you take on risks, yet you step forward boldly to save lives,” Muhyiddin was heard saying.

Their three-minute video was posted on the orchestra’s Facebook account yesterday. - Mkini
