Bersatu quintet disputes ‘termination’, says Muhyiddin feeling insecure
The five Bersatu leaders issued termination letters today have rejected them, saying that it went against the law and their right to justice.
They also accused Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin of feeling insecure in facing the upcoming party election due to his tenuous grip on power in Putrajaya.
In a joint statement today, they said Clause 10.2.2 and 10.2.3 of the Bersatu constitution that was cited as the reason for their termination was only applicable to those who declared that they had left the party or had joined any other political party in Malaysia.
“Based on the above definitions, it is extremely ridiculous and unreasonable to say we have left the party, whereas we had only done what is allowed by law and within our rights under the Federal Constitution as legitimate members of Parliament.
“We absolutely disagree that our membership has been terminated with immediate effect and this is against the law and denies us our right to defend and explain ourselves, as well as our rights as enshrined under the principle of rule of law.
“What is clear is that the president’s office is playing politics while the country faces the Covid-19 pandemic as well as an economic recession.
“This shows the president's dictatorial inclinations. We also wish to state the Bersatu president’s unilateral action to sack us without reason is because of his anxiety in facing the party election, as well his insecure position as the most unstable prime minister in our country’s administrative history,” they said in their statement.
The joint statement was signed by Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Jerlun MP Mukhriz Mahathir, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Rahman, Kubang Pasu MP Amiruddin Hamzah and Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik.
Mukhriz is also Muhyiddin’s sole challenger for the post of president in the party election, which had been postponed following the implementation of the movement control order to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Earlier today, Bersatu organising secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya issued the letters to the five MPs saying their memberships had been terminated.
This is for sitting on the side “not supporting the Perikatan Nasional government” during the parliamentary sitting on May 18.
During the sitting, 114 MPs had sat on the government bench, giving Muhyiddin a razor-thin majority of just two MPs in the Dewan Rakyat.
Meanwhile, the five MPs said the fact that the letters had been signed by Suhaimi showed that the party’s secretariat was in disarray and not professionally run as the organising secretary had no power under the Bersatu constitution.
“The actions of an organising secretary sending such letters to people who are among Bersatu’s founders is obnoxious and uncouth,” they said. - Mkini
