Johor reps barred from bringing mobile phones for tomorrow's sitting

Malaysiakini

Mobile phones will not be allowed during the Johor state assembly sitting tomorrow. This is the instruction sent to representatives via Whatsapp.
The message from state assembly secretary Shubanah Yusuf said representatives must be present at the venue by 8.20am and would need to undergo metal detector and temperature checks before entering the hall.
“Mobile phones are not allowed in the chamber.
“However, if YB (yang berhormat) wants to bring a mobile phone, YB must keep it in a storage box outside the hall and an identification storage number will be provided.
“Your cooperation on this matter is much appreciated,” read the message sighted by Malaysiakini.
Amanah's Kota Iskandar representative Dzulkefly Ahmad wondered who instructed Shubanah to send the message.
“For sure, this is not from the speaker. Such instructions should be issued via a formal letter (and not through Whatsapp),” he told Malaysiakini.
“Can we know who ordered this? Does the secretary's power supersede that of the speaker's?” he asked.
DAP's Pekan Nanas assemblyperson Yeo Tung Siong (photo) said he had asked Shubanah to issue a formal letter as the representatives need to know who issued the order.
On the other hand, PKR's Bukit Batu assemblyperson Jimmy Puah Wee Tse said: "As far as I know, this (bar on mobile phones) has never happened before.”
However, according to a state assembly source, the message was an “administrative order” and did not originate from the speaker.
Malaysiakini has contacted Shubanah for comment.
Tomorrow's sitting, which is scheduled to start at 9.30am, has been cut short in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Apart from state ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's decree, assemblypersons were notified through a circular that there would be no questions, motions or bills on the agenda.
The barring of mobile phones comes in the wake of assemblypersons in Malacca and Perak recording the chaos which erupted in their respective state assemblies, which went viral on social media.  - Mkini
