Netflix Pays $2.4 Million PER EPISODE to Turn Korean Webtoon Into Live-Action K-Drama
A popular South Korean Webtoon series is getting a K-drama version on Netflix and reports indicate that the streaming service is spending mad cash to get it right.
Netflix is reportedly investing about $2.4 million per episode in producing “Sweet Home,” a live-action series based on its Webtoon predecessor.
Created by Kim Kan-bi and Hwang Young-chan, the source material is an ongoing serial on the Korean site Naver that revolves around a boy trying to survive a world where people are turning into monsters.
The official synopsis for the fantasy-thriller goes as follows: “After an unexpected family tragedy, a reclusive high school student is forced to leave his home — only to face something much scarier: a reality where monsters are trying to wipe out humanity. Now he must fight alongside a handful of reluctant heroes to try and save the world before it’s too late.”
Fan anticipation has been growing since the live-action adaptation was announced in early 2019.
TV director Lee Eung Bok was tasked to helm the K-drama version of the popular IP. Lee is known for his work on international hits such as “Mr. Sunshine,” “Descendants of The Sun,” and “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.”
Actor Song Kang, who played Sun-oh in the Netflix original series “Love Alarm,” stars alongside Lee Jin-uk and Lee Si-young as the main cast, according to Netflix.
The rest of the cast is an ensemble of “newcomers and veteran actors, such as Lee Do-hyun (Hotel del Luna), Kim Nam-hee (Mr. Sunshine), Go Min-si (Love Alarm) Park Kyu-young (Romance is a Bonus Book), Go Youn-jung (He Is Psychometric), Kim Kap-soo (Designated Survivor: 60 Days) and Kim Sang-ho (Kingdom).”
Produced by Studio Dragon, “Sweet Home” wrapped up filming on March 1 and is set to debut on Netflix later this year.
