Cracks beginning to show in PH, says analyst
PETALING JAYA: An analyst believes cracks are starting to show in the opposition bloc, particularly after PKR president Anwar Ibrahim’s no-show at a press conference held by Dr Mahathir Mohamad when other Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders were present.
Azmi Hassan of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said Anwar’s reason for his absence – that the presser was not officially called by PH – was odd, particularly since DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu were there.
He said it was obvious that there were unsettled issues within the opposition and warned that their potential to retake Putrajaya will be affected should their differences fail to be resolved.
Azmi said the internal squabbling, which was already going on since PH had PPBM as a partner, was synonymous with the perception that the coalition could not perform well as a government.
“The opposition needs to set aside this kind of internal bickering, which was how they lost being the government in the first place.
“The people are quite wary and might suspect that they do not have what it takes to govern the country,” he told FMT.
James Chin of University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said PKR seemed to be the weak link in PH right now, adding that there was a possibility of more defections from Anwar’s party to Perikatan Nasional (PN).
He said PN’s formal registration as a political entity will be a major determining factor if it were to be established as a single coalition by the next general election.
“If PN is registered as a coalition – which I think they will – then this will allow all PN parties, including Barisan Nasional (BN), to stand under a single party symbol.
“And the longer they (PN) hang onto power, the easier it will be for them to bring some PKR people over,” he said.
Chin said PPBM’s current position was historic and interesting, as there had never been a ruling party that had MPs in both the government and opposition bloc.
When it came to political organisation, Azmi said, BN seemed to be the more stable coalition compared to PN and PH.
“PN is the most fractured since the members are there together because of different agenda, compared to PH who, despite their internal bickering, had a common agenda which was to get rid of BN.”
He expects Muafakat Nasional, the political cooperation between Umno and PAS, to play a bigger role in the nation’s political future than BN by itself.
[Ronnie Liu] said there would have been no problems if Mahathir had not resigned, and had heeded the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and if the veteran statesman had not proposed a unity government minus PH and other political parties.
“In the end, the PH government fell because of a power grab by those in Tun M’s party,” he said, referring to PPBM.
In a Facebook post, he made specific reference to former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and president Muhyiddin Yassin.
He added that it had been PPBM which had rejected the suggestion for anti-hopping laws which would have prevented the collapse of state governments in Johor, Melaka, Perak and Kedah.
“Tun M is the reason for the fall of PH, and he has yet to admit his mistake and apologise to the people.”

Seems like Atuk continues to eff up Anwar IBrahim kaukau by his selfish intention to wrest control of PPBM, the majority of its members having already frogged across to Perikatan Nasional (PN). Mind, not that Atuk has been considering or had veer considered Anwar's interest, but only his and his son(s)'.

Anwar Ibrahim is NOW the head of Pakatan Harapan, so why should he attend a press conference held by Mahathir who resigned as PM in February and in the process eff-ed up his Harapan cabinet (all without jobs then), voiced his intention to form a cabinet of his own choosing minus any party involvement (including the component parties of Harapan) and thus effectively gave two-fingers to Harapan.
Yes, why should Anwar, who has been eff-ed up by this wicked malicious Old Man, continuously since 1998 (inclusive of a corruption plus Sodomy conviction and a jail term), attend Mahathir's press conference - surely we all could see no advantage for Anwar or even Harapan in the Old Man's pompous vindictive ravings, railings and rantings at that presser.
And may I ask, why was the DAP (sec-gen Lim GE) and Amanah (president Mat Sabu) doing with Atuk when the latter has shown such disdain, disregard and disrespect for Harapan's interests?
It's true Mahathir still has many acolytes in Amanah (eg. Khalid Ibrahim), but why has the DAP continue to brown-nose him? On this question, I have to qualify the DAP situation to say quite confidently that only the Lim's (hungry-greedy KHAT-aSS) and their inner cohorts continue to suck up to Atuk, whilst salt-of the-earth types like Ronnie Liu and Ramkarpal-Sangeeta Singh's despise Mahathir.

Well Ronnie, Mahathir won't ever apologise.
So, in the final analysis, it's not just Mahathir eff-ing up Anwar and Harapan, but he did it with disgusting complicit support from the DAP highest leadership group, namely KHAT-aSS, Chye-Chye and inner coterie. P'tui - what greed, what idiocy, what masochism!
Anwar Ibrahim did the correct thing by keeping clear of an evil black-hearted Old Man who would only be 'using' Pakatan Harapan for his vile vicious vindictive intentions.
