Plan to boost public transport underway

SUBANG JAYA: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd will look at ways to increase public transport ridership in a post-Covid-19 era, says its new group chairman Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

Tajuddin said the Covid-19 outbreak and the resulting movement control order (MCO) had led to a decrease in public transport users but that the numbers were gradually returning under the conditional MCO.

“A post-Covid-19 plan is important, and I am confident that the numbers will rise once the outbreak subsides.

“That’s when we need to look at promoting our public transport system so that more people will use it, ” he said after a working visit to the Sunway BRT (bus rapid transit) depot here yesterday.

He said he and Prasarana’s management team would plan an awareness campaign to attract more public transport users.

“Looking at the BRT, we can see it is an efficient way to travel – the electric buses provide good service.

“This is a cheaper alternative to using your own private car or e-hailing cars.

“We want to embark on an awareness campaign as many are still not aware of the benefits of using public transport, ” he said.

On the BRT, Tajuddin said Prasarana had implemented social distancing measures to ensure passengers’ safety was taken care of.

“In view of Covid-19, we have implemented social distancing measures such as limiting passengers to only 20 in a bus at any one time.

“The buses are also constantly monitored (remotely) so that there will be rapid response if there is any issue with safety, ” he added.

Tajuddin was accompanied by Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Muhammad Yazurin Sallij, chief operating officer Ku Jamil Zakaria, and BRT chief Ruslina Kamaruddin, as he toured the BRT depot.

Yazurin said there was a service capacity decrease of between 30% and 50% for the BRT due to social distancing measures.
