Group condemns sexual harassment on reporter’s livestream

Malaysiakini

Journalists’ group Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) has condemned alleged sexual harassment targeting a female journalist, and urged the police to take appropriate action against the perpetrators.
It referred to Malaysia Gazette journalist Zazrina Zainuddin, who has reportedly lodged a police report on the matter on Monday.
“Geramm emphasises that any form of sexual harassment against any individual - in this case involving a reporter - is absolutely unacceptable,” the group said in a statement today.
According to a report by Malaysia Gazette yesterday, Zazrina received lewd comments on the news portal’s Facebook livestreams whenever she appears as host.
She reportedly said she found the behaviour disconcerting and felt it is a threat to her safety.
“The harassment occurs regardless of the topic during livestreams, and only when I’m the host handling the livestream.
“The comments are more or less the same and have sexual connotations, which caused other viewers to feel uncomfortable, too,” she was quoted as saying.
She said some viewers have also urged her and Malaysia Gazette to lodge a police report against the alleged perpetrators.
Malaysia Gazette reported that the report has been lodged at the Serdang district police headquarters.
Meanwhile, Geramm noted that reporters have received various forms of harassment as press conferences are regularly streamed on social media platforms throughout the movement control order period.
These occurred whether reporters are handling livestreams, or when asking questions during press conferences that are streamed live.
“The harassment not only takes the form of sexual or lewd comments but also impinges on racial issues and physical appearance,” Geramm said. - Mkini
