Anwar takes on critics who call him a 'chameleon'

Malaysiakini

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is known for his oratory skills but critics have described him as a "chameleon" who speaks differently to different communities.
Acknowledging the criticisms, Anwar said while he was conscious of his different audience, his message of justice has always been consistent.
He said this while briefing PKR members in Kota Kinabalu this morning on effective communication ahead of the Sabah election on Sept 26.
"Our audience is important. People criticise that one moment I would quote from the Quran and another moment I would quote Shakespeare; that one moment I would do an Indian dance and another moment I would give a sermon.
"Can he be trusted? He changes like a chameleon. But they do not understand, I can't possibly go to a mosque to give a talk and suddenly quote Shakespeare, Winstons Churchill or Abraham Lincoln," he said.
Likewise, Anwar said he cannot be speaking in Arabic verses when communicating with the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut community.
"We need to consider our audience but one thing doesn't change - we do not lie. When we quote from the Quran, we talk about justice. When we quote Shakespeare in the cities, we talk about justice.
"When we talk to the Kadazan, Dusun and Murut communities, we talk about justice and compassion," he added.
Anwar urged PKR campaigners to have a good understanding of the party's mission and track record so that they can communicate effectively during the election.
He added that while people may like to occasionally hear outsiders speak, it was important for the party to highlight local leaders as they would have a better understanding of local issues.
Anwar arrived in Sabah yesterday and is on a tour to launch the PKR election machinery.
He also met with Warisan president Shafie Apdal, who is also the caretaker chief minister, this morning.
Nomination day is set to take place on Sept 12. - Mkini
