Authorities urged to monitor sale of non-medical face masks
The Malaysian Association of Standards Users (Standards Users) has urged the authorities to closely monitor the sale of non-medical face masks online and at stores.
In a statement today, its president Prof Emeritus Dr Marimuthu Nadason said that it was important to prevent people from being infected by the Covid-19 virus.
"There is no problem about locally made face masks for medical personnel because it is under the jurisdiction of the Medical Device Authority, but for the public, there will be a problem because non-medical face masks are not subject to any authority,” he said.
Most face masks sold online, he said, are imported from China with YY/T 0969-2013 (disposable medical mask), GB/T 32610-2016 (technical specification of daily protective masks) and YY 0469-2011 (medical surgical mask) standards. However, the association found that the standard code for face masks sold in pharmacies around Klang Valley was YY/T 0969-2013 (medical face mask) which was not in line with the Chinese standard code of "disposable medical mask".
He stressed that consumers have the right to get accurate information about a product so that they have the option to choose a product based on their personal needs and budget.
