Vote scandal-free candidates, ex-MACC adviser tells Sabah voters

KUALA LUMPUR: A former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser has urged Sabahans to vote for candidates who are “scandal-free” in the Sept 26 state election.
Robert Phang, who used to serve on MACC’s advisory council, said he pitied Sabahans as political parties on both sides were offering individuals facing criminal charges as candidates.
“Any ordinary, righteous-thinking person will feel ‘funny’ that those who are facing trial can be picked to stand for election,” said Phang, who is a social activist.
“Is Sabah so bankrupt of talent that there are no other candidates? Voters should clip the wings of such candidates by not voting for them regardless of which party they represent,” he said.
Parties on both sides of the political fence are fielding some candidates who are facing trial for corruption.
Phang also said he had concerns about money politics and urged the authorities to look into this as election campaigning swings into full gear.
“Parties should also contest ethically and not use the campaigning period as a cover for making baseless allegations.
“Regardless of who you are or who your opponent is, if you have evidence of any wrongdoing, report it to the authorities.”
He was commenting on allegations made by Warisan president Shafie Apdal against former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman and his brother Anifah.
During campaigning, Shafie reportedly alleged that Musa and Anifah had awarded some 700,000 acres of forest reserve to “friends and family”.
Anifah, a former foreign minister, has said he will be taking legal action against Shafie over the allegations.
Sabahans, Phang said, now had the chance to choose their representatives and should support credible candidates rather than just vote for parties.
“We have seen changes in the government at the federal and state level since the 14th General Election.
“The public must realise the power of their vote, they can put good people in power. On both sides, there are good and bad, vote for those who have a good track record.” - FMT
