Warisan Plus, Bersatu and BN to unveil candidates on Thurs

Warisan Plus, together with state opposition parties Sabah BN and Bersatu, will unveil their candidates for the upcoming Sabah state election on Thursday morning, two days before nomination.

This is according to notices sent out to the media by Sabah BN and Warisan this evening.

Warisan and its allies - Pakatan Harapan and United Progressive Kinabalu Bersatu (Upko) - will announce their candidates at 9.30am at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

BN and Bersatu are set to announce their candidates at 10am at a local hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

It is understood that BN and Bersatu initially had no plans to hold the event together according to an earlier media invite.

BN had planned to announce their candidates on Wednesday while Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional (PN) were said to be unveiling their candidates the next day.

The relationship between Sabah Umno and Sabah Bersatu has been strained due to overlapping claims by both Malay-based parties in seat negotiations. However, it was reported that both parties more or less overcame the deadlock.

Sabah Umno was reportedly going to contest 30 seats while Bersatu expected to field up to 20 candidates.

When contacted, Sabah Umno deputy chief Yakubah Khan confirmed that BN would announce its candidate together with Bersatu on Thursday.

BN decided to postpone its candidate announcement due to the appeal hearing brought by former chief minister Musa Aman at the Court of Appeal yesterday.

"We were waiting because we (do not want a scene where) the court calls off the state polls after we announced our candidates. So, we decided to wait," Yakubah told Malaysiakini.

"As such, it would be a short notice if we hold it by Wednesday," he added.

He, however, wasn't sure if parties aligned to PN, including Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), will join the event.

"I am not sure," he said.

Earlier today, Star president Jeffrey Kitingan told Malaysiakini that he was unhappy as his party was only offered to contest six to eight seats when the party wanted to contest 15 to 18 seats. - Mkini
