Anwar lauds IGP for rescheduling Guan Eng's questioning

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has lauded Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador for rescheduling the questioning of former finance minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim was supposed to be questioned by police today - Christmas eve - over two press releases which he issued in 2019.

However, this has since been postponed to sometime next year, with Hamid reportedly apologising to the DAP secretary-general for the oversight in fixing the appointment.

"The IGP's decision to move Lim's questioning by the police to next year has helped to an extent in addressing these negative perceptions (that police are politically biased and vindictive)," Anwar said in a statement last night.

"Hamid's personal touch in apologising to Lim for his officer's oversight is also reflective of a police leadership, which is sensitive to the opinions and concerns of the public," he added.

The PKR president said no one is asking for Lim to be given special treatment, just that the rule of law is applied fairly.

It is yet not clear what statements the former finance minister is being questioned over.

However, in June next year, the court will hear evidence from the prosecution against Lim, who faces four charges over the Penang undersea tunnel project.

Lim was accused of receiving gratification of RM3.3 million, soliciting bribes amounting to 10 percent of the profits for the project and abusing his position to dispose of two plots of land valued at RM208 million.

Investigations against Lim over the tunnel project had begun during the BN administration but no charges were laid until PN came to power.

The undersea tunnel project to link George Town on the island and Butterworth on the mainland was conceived when Lim was still helming the state.

However, the project has been bogged down by corruption probes.

In April 2019, businessperson G Gnanaraja was charged with cheating project contractor Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd's boss Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli of RM18 million. - Mkini
