Not a memorial but beautification of Highland Towers site, Zuraida clarifies

 

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin has clarified that her ministry does not plan to build a memorial at the site of the collapsed Highland Towers Condominium.

Instead, she said the ministry only plans to beautify the place and turn it into a historical site to memorialise the tragedy on Dec 11, 1993, that killed 48 people.

“The Highland Towers area needs to be given a new lease of life because social problems in the area have caused unease among local residents.

“Thus, the demolition of the buildings that have been abandoned for 27 years would be beautified through the development of a historical site, which at the same time would ensure the welfare of residents in the Highland Towers area,” she said in a statement last night.

Yesterday, Bernama quoted Zuraida saying that her ministry plans to build a memorial at the site pending the approval of an RM8.9 million allocation to acquire the land from the Selangor government.

“When I say park (as reported previously), people might have got the wrong idea that it will become an open area with facilities such as playgrounds.

“(Actually) it is not a recreational park, instead what we want to develop is a memorial surrounded by a small park and walking track,” she reportedly said during a TV interview aired on Wednesday night.

Demolition and cleaning works are set to begin once the allocation has been approved by the Finance Ministry. - Mkini
