5,000 beds still available at Serdang quarantine centre

Several video clips were circulated recently allegedly showing congestion at the quarantine centre.

SHAH ALAM: About 5,000 beds are still available at the Covid-19 quarantine and low-risk treatment centre at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park in Serdang, a health official said today.

Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman, the Selangor health director, said the average number of beds used at the centre was between 3,000 and 3,500. So far there are still about 5,000 beds that have not been used.

The centre handles quarantine patients and those with mild symptoms. “A total of 9,350 beds are available for Category 1 and Category 2 patients (those with mild symptoms) and now we have placed 60 acute beds for Category 3 and 4 patients (if needed),” he said.

Sha’ari said the centre receives Covid-19 cases from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur and also patients from Melaka, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.

Several video clips have been circulated recently allegedly showing congestion at the centre.

Sha’ari said a recent Covid-19 case of a nurse at Shah Alam Hospital was the result of community transmission and not an infection from the hospital.

He said the staff had been screened and were currently being treated while all close contacts have undergone screening tests and were found to be negative. - FMT
