Govt owes highway concessionaires RM1.51b for freezing toll hike

Putrajaya needs to fork out RM1.51 billion in compensation to highway concessionaires for freezing an increase in toll hikes across the country, according to Works Minister Fadillah Yusof.

Of this figure, the senior minister said RM1.34 billion was owed in 2020 over the government's decision not to allow a toll hike for all highways that year.

The outstanding compensation for 2017 and 2018 was RM195.71 million, he said.

"However, the amount is subject to verification by the government auditor and highway concessionaire's auditor, " Fadillah told DAP's Damansara MP Tony Pua in a parliamentary reply.

The biggest chunk of the compensation for 2020, approximately RM438.85 million, is to go to Plus Malaysia Bhd, which operates the North-South Expressway (NSE). The amount also covers compensation for the Seremban-Port Dickson Highway (SPDH).

For NSE and SPDH, the government has yet to settle an RM169.07 million outstanding compensation from 2018.

RM77.31 million goes to Shah Alam Expressway operator Gelumbang Jaya Sdn Bhd. This is the second-highest compensation for 2020.

RM67.32 million goes to Plus Malaysia Bhd for not increasing toll charges at the NSE Central Link.

This is followed by East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (RM64.11 million), Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (RM55.99 million) and Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Highway (RM51.58 million).

It was also reported that the government needs to pay out another RM972.75 million in compensation following its decision not to allow a toll hike for 21 highways. - Mkini
