Brave dad saves family, documents, car in Masjid Tanah blaze
MASJID TANAH: A 42-year-old factory technician was injured after saving his family members from their burning house in Kampung Durian Daun early today.
Sulaiman Kaus' heroic deed saved his 79-year-old mother-in-law, wife, and three children aged four, five and six.
However, he scalded his hands and right shoulder, and injured his back when he dashed in and out of the house during the 3am blaze.
When relating what happened, Sulaiman said his wife, Siti Faismah Basir, 42, and him were both sleeping in their room while his mother-in-law, Norisah Tahir and three children were sleeping in their respective rooms.
"My wife woke me up when she noticed fire raging from the porch and it had already spread to the living room.
"I quickly took her mother and our children out from the house, while running against the flames," he said when met at the scene.
Sulaiman brought his family to safety by placing them at a nearby hill behind the house.
However, he decided to dash into his home to retrieve the family members' MyKad and other important documents.
He also managed to move his Perodua Alza vehicle by going into the burning house again to obtain the car keys.
"I did not realise that my hand and right shoulder was scalded. It was only when things had calmed down and the fire was put out by firemen that I realised I was hurt."
A Civil Defence Force officer later sent Sulaiman to the Alor Gajah Hospital and he was given outpatient treatment.
Sulaiman said he planned to bring his family to his parents' house in Kampung Solok Air Batu, which is about two kilometres from their home.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Soon Wee Kiang said the Masjid Tanah Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 3.03am.
He said a fire engine with six personnel were deployed to the scene from the Alor Gajah Fire and Rescue Station and it reached the location at 3.08 am.
"The semi-permanent house was razed about 90 per cent and the family of six managed to escape during the incident. The operation ended at 6.49 am," he said. - NST
