Netizens allege TMJ, JDT flouted SOPs at farewell dinner

Netizens have questioned whether Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and the Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) football team had allegedly flouted Covid-19 SOPs at a dinner event two weeks ago.

At 11pm on May 10, the Johor Southern Tigers page on Twitter and Facebook uploaded pictures of Tunku Ismail and the JDT team having a farewell dinner for midfielder Hariss Harun, who was the team captain.

JDT announced Harris' departure earlier that day.

On social media, many of the reactions to the farewell dinner criticised the crown prince and the football team for flouting rules prohibiting social events, and questioned why social distancing rules were not followed.

Many also tagged police and Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to ask whether action would be taken over the event.

It is unclear where the farewell dinner was held.

Under various lockdowns

At the time of the farewell dinner, parts of Johor, namely the districts of Johor Bahru, Kulai, and Kota Tinggi, were under the movement control order (MCO) while the rest of the state was under the conditional MCO (CMCO).

Regardless, National Security Council guidelines for both MCO and CMCO on May 10 prohibited social events.

Earlier CMCO SOPs from May 6 allowed for social functions at 50 percent capacity of the venue, but stressed that masks and social distancing had to be complied with.

Malaysiakini has contacted Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and Ismail Sabri for comment. Malaysiakini is also attempting to get a response from the Johor palace.

Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in his Aidilfitri message on May 13, said it was important for the people to follow all Covid-19 SOPs to break the chain of infection.

The monarch said this included the use of masks and social distancing.

On May 11, Ismail Sabri said police needed to issue compounds to anyone who violated SOPs immediately, regardless of whether they were VIPs or regular people. - Mkini
